After four seasons of professional racing in Europe with the French AG2R-Prévoyance team, former World Junior Road Champion Mark Scanlon made the decision to leave the top echelon of professional cycling behind to join the U.S. circuit in 2007 as a member of the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team. Unfortunately, pressing family matters kept him in Ireland and prevented him from racing in the United States for the entire 2007 season.
For Scanlon, a Tour De France competitor in 2004 and two-time Irish National Road Champion in 2002 and 2003, a loss of motivation worsened by Europe’s doping woes was a major factor in his decision to join Toyota-United.
Growing up in Sligo, Ireland, Scanlon was introduced to sports like soccer and Gaelic football as a child. Cycling was an unlikely career for someone from the west of Ireland. But at an early age, it was apparent that he had “dynamite in his legs.” When Scanlon was 11, his father bought him his first racing bike. Seven years later, in 1998, Scanlon won his first Irish road race championship on his 18th birthday.
Establishing himself as one of the top amateurs, Scanlon took his career to France, spending four years with some of the country’s top amateur teams. In 2003, he signed his first pro contract, a season highlighted by a stage win in the Tour of
Denmark – where he went on to wear the leader's jersey for three days. He also won his second straight Irish national road championship that year.
In 2004, Scanlon rode the Tour de France, placing 89th and earning the nod to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in Athens. While injury plagued him for much of the 2005 season, he showed fine form in 2006 with a strong performance at the Giro d’Italia before retiring after stage 12.
