chris.wherryChris Wherry

flag_us_sml.gifCountry: United States

Height: 6’2"

Weight: 162 lbs.

Date of Birth: 07/18/1973

Place of Birth: Boulder, CO

Residence: Durango, CO

Pro Since: 1997

As team co-captain for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Wherry’s maturity and ability to act as liaison between team management and the riders has enabled the team to stay connected and loyal in order to produce the desired “team effect”.  Although Wherry has battled illness’ both seasons, Wherry remains a solid contributor both in terms of helping the team win races and playing a support role when it’s not his day.  In 2006, Wherry ended the year with seven total first place finishes, including winning Stage 1 and the overall at the Cascade Cycling Classic and two stages at the inaugural Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and four podium placings in 2007.

This year marks Wherry’s 11th as a professional and his intensity, mental toughness and tenacious work ethic make him one of the most dangerous cyclists – and respected – riders in the peloton. In 2002, Wherry won the Saturn Cycling Classic, an epic 138-mile race through the Colorado Rockies from Boulder to Breckenridge, only three days after losing his father to leukemia. The pinnacle of his career however, came in 2005, when he became USPRO Road Champion, a monumental win that catapulted him to the elite levels of the sport.

Introduced to cycling by his parents, who took him to watch the Coors Classic in his hometown of Boulder, Colo., more than 20 years ago, Wherry was hooked on the sport from the first day and started racing full time right out of high school. He is an all-round rider who enjoys long, hard, and highly tactical races like the Philadelphia International Championships, and is among a rare group of riders who possess speed, endurance and climbing strength.

As diverse as his riding skills are his training methods; Wherry believes there is more to staying fit than just pedaling it on the pavement. It’s not uncommon for him to include four- or five-hour trail rides on a mountain bike into his regimen. When he’s not cycling, Wherry still likes to be outdoors – hiking, camping, snowboarding, and fly fishing or chasing his new love – surfing.
