Three years ago, the name Ivan Stevic was one most North American cycling fans would not have known. But thanks to his spectacular debut on the U.S. domestic circuit in 2005, multiple podium appearances in 2006, followed up by a spectacular 2007 season, U.S. fans are fully aware of Ivan Stevic now.

In what was his first year as a professional in 2005, Stevic gathered together a string of impressive wins for Aerospace Engineering-VMG, with multiple stage victories at the Sea Otter Classic and La Vuelta de Bisbee (where he was also first overall). He continued to make his presence known that season, finishing in the top five no less than 10 times and placing 8th and 9th, respectively, in Wachovia’s Trenton and Lancaster races.

In 2006, he continued his winning ways, with 13 top-three finishes – including wins at the Nature Valley Grand Prix and Maxxis Georgia Cup. He also claimed his second consecutive national title and the inaugural Serbian National Road Championships.

Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Stevic raced in his home country as a junior, participating in two World Championships, and winning the Under-23 National Championships in both 2001 and 2002. In 2000, he moved to Italy where he raced for five years, collecting more than 20 career victories.

Coming off a successful season in 2004 in Italy - winning six races and owning the jersey for best foreign rider at the baby Giro D’Italia for the first five days - he decided to make a move to the U.S. While he says it is very different from racing in Europe, it is a change he welcomes.

Stevic enjoyed a spectacular season through June, winning the UCI B World Road Race Championship in Cape Town, South Africa, and earning an automatic berth to the 2008 Olympic Games. But soreness in his knees has kept him out of action since winning the right to wear his blue-and-rainbow jersey on July 1.
